How to create virtual package, install and configure Application Virtual 4.6 client for Windows 7 :-) with Management Server 4.5 and System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R2

1 comment février 26th, 2010

Hi,

4.6

I explain in this post what’s Appv 4.6 and how to create virtual package, install and configure appv 4.6 client for Windows 7.

For information, Application Virtual 4.6 is include in the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP) 2010.

Microsoft Application Virtualization Technical Overview

Realize greater efficiency and responsiveness for software deployments and updates.

Application virtualization is at the heart of Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V). It decouples applications from the operating system and enables them to run as network services. Application virtualization can be layered on top of other virtualization technologies—network, storage, machine—to create a fully virtual IT environment where computing resources can be dynamically allocated in real-time based on real-time needs. App-V’s patented application virtualization, dynamic streaming delivery, and centralized management technologies make everything from deployments and upgrades to migrations and business continuity initiatives easier and faster with better agility:

Application virtualization: Enable applications to run without the need to visit a desktop, laptop, or terminal server. Applications are no longer installed on the client—and there is minimal impact on the host operating system or other applications. The most extensive virtualization technology on the market, App-V virtualizes per user, per application instance, as well as key application components. As a result, application conflicts and the need for regression testing are dramatically reduced.

Dynamic streaming delivery: Applications are rapidly delivered, when needed, to laptops, desktops, and terminal servers. In most cases only a small percentage of the application is needed to launch the application. Additional components are delivered when transparently requested by the application. This results in faster delivery of the application when needed.

Centralized, policy-based management: Virtual Application deployments, patches, updates, and terminations are more easily managed via policies, and administered through the App-V console or via your ESD system. Use Microsoft App-V Application Virtualization to help reduce the complexities inherent in enterprise application management. With App-V you can reduce challenges and transform your computing environment into a dynamic, services-oriented infrastructure.

Standard Operating System Environment Standard Operating System Environment: In standard OS environments, applications install their settings onto the host operating system, hard-coding the entire system to fit that application’s needs. Other applications’ settings can be overwritten, possibly causing them to malfunction or break.
The Virtual Application Environment The Virtual Application Environment: With application virtualization, each application brings down its own set of configurations on-demand, and executes in a way so that only it sees its own settings.
The Virtual Application Environment Side-by-Side Virtualization: Each App-V enabled application brings down its own set of configurations and can run side by side without the settings conflicting with each other—or the host operating system. Despite this separation, inter-application communication with other App-V applications and those installed locally is preserved, allowing for cut and paste, OLE, and all other standard operations.

How to Deploying the MED-V Client by an Distribution Software Method such as SMS2003 / SCCM 2007

No comments février 24th, 2010

Hi,

I find a great post to how to for Deploying the MED-V Client via an Electronic Software Distribution Method such as SMS2003 / SCCM 2007.

This article describes one method that you can use to deploy the MED-V client using SMS/SCCM. The method that is described in this article is not the only method that is available. Additionally, you may have to modify the information in this article as appropriate for your particular environment.

Distribution Software (SCCM or SMS) as an alternative to the MED-V Deployment Package Wizard

For many system administrators, there will be a need to deploy the client silently without user interaction. While the MED-V Package Deployment Wizard does create a streamlined installation, it does require user interaction and was not designed to be deployed via SCCM or SMS. It was designed as an alternative.

Installing Pre-requisite Software

Because MED-V v1 requires the Virtual PC 2007 virtualization engine, most MED-V deployments will require at least a partial deployment of Virtual PC. The Virtual PC 2007 SP1 installer (included with MED-V version 1.0) can be fully automated.

Here is an example of a command string to leverage with an installation script for Virtual PC 2007:

%SystemRoot%\System32\MsiExec.exe /i « <PackagePath>\x86\Virtual_PC_2007_Install.msi » /qb! REBOOT=ReallySuppress ALLUSERS=1 /l* C:\Build\Logs\VirtualPc2007.log

Once the Virtual PC engine has been installed, a required QFE update is also needed prior to the deployment of the MED-V client. Since this is an .MSP file (installer patch) we will need to use the MSIEXEC /update option as follows:

%SystemRoot%\System32\MsiExec.exe /update « <PackagePath>\x86\KB974918-x64.msp » /q /l* c:\qfelog.log

Installing the Client

All of the options that can be specified during an interactive installation can also be installed from the command line. For example, the command string below will deploy the MED-V client with an alternate local images folder as well as a pre-configured server configuration:

%SystemRoot%\System32\MsiExec.exe /i <PackagePath>\MED-V_1.0.72.msi /qb! REBOOT=ReallySuppress VMSFOLDER=D:\MEDVImages START_AUTOMATICALLY=1 SERVER_ADDRESS=medvserver01.contoso.com SERVER_PORT=80 START_MED-V=0 MINIMAL_RAM_REQUIRED=2048 SERVER_DOMAIN=contoso.com ALLUSERS=1 /log C:\Build\Logs\MEDVClient.log

Thanks a lot at the team MED-V for this information!

MDOP 2010 | Microsoft® Enterprise Desktop Virtualization 1.0 SP1 documentation is available for download

No comments février 24th, 2010

Hi,

The new version of Microsoft® Enterprise Desktop Virtualization 1.0 SP1 documentation  is available on Connect.

What’s News:

Microsoft® Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V) enables deployment and management of Microsoft Virtual PC to address key enterprise scenarios, primarily resolving application compatibility with a new version of Windows.

Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V) removes the barriers to Windows upgrades by resolving application incompatibility with Windows Vista or Windows 7.  MED-V delivers applications in a Virtual PC that runs a previous version of the operating system (for example, Windows XP).  And it does so in a way that is completely seamless and transparent to the user. Applications appear and operate as if they were installed on the desktop, so that users can even pin them to the task bar.  For IT administrators, MED-V helps deploy, provision, control, and support the virtual environments.

Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization is an integral tool in the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack, a dynamic solution available to Software Assurance customers that helps reduce application deployment costs, enable delivery of applications as services, and better manage and control enterprise desktop environments.

MED-V 1.0 SP1 will add host support for Windows 7 (32bit and 64bit) and will be released in the first quarter of calendar year 2010.
Similarly to MED-V 1.0, MED-V 1.0 SP1 will leverage Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 to provide an enterprise solution for Application compatibility, and enabling the deployment of Virtual PCs across the enterprise.
